Advanced Driver Distraction Warning

Advanced Driver Distraction Warning is designed to notify drivers who appear to be distracted while operating their vehicles. When driver distraction is detected, the steering wheel vibrates (or, depending on vehicle configuration, a chime sounds) and an alert displays on the touchscreen.
Driver distraction detected. Please pay attention to the road.

If this alert appears, the driver must actively return their focus to driving. The alert clears once the driver has been assessed to be attentive again.

Advanced Driver Distraction Warning activates automatically when the vehicle is driven above 20 km/h for 60 consecutive seconds and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not actively controlling the vehicle.

You can disable or enable Advanced Driver Distraction Warning alerts by touching Controls > Safety > Advanced Driver Distraction Warning. This setting applies to the current drive only. Each time the vehicle is in Park and you walk away, Advanced Driver Distraction Warning automatically re-enables at the start of the next drive.

If Advanced Driver Distraction Warning is unavailable, the touchscreen displays an alert.

Note
This active safety feature uses the cabin camera to monitor driver attentiveness. The cabin camera does not perform facial recognition or any other method of identity verification. By default, images and video from the camera do not leave the vehicle and are not transmitted to anyone, including Tesla, unless you enable data sharing. To adjust your data sharing preferences, touch Controls > Software > Data Sharing > Allow Cabin Camera Analytics. You can change your data sharing settings at any time.

Warning
It is your responsibility to stay alert and attentive, drive safely, and be in control of the vehicle at all times. Never depend on Advanced Driver Distraction Warning to maintain safe control of your vehicle. Always watch the road in front of you and be prepared to take corrective action at all times. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or death.

The cabin camera lens is fragile. Do not touch, tamper with, or otherwise manipulate the lens and do not use any tissue or fabric on it. Any contact with the lens may degrade the overall performance of the driver monitoring system permanently.

Limitations and Inaccuracies

Advanced Driver Distraction Warning may not provide warnings when:

  • The cabin camera is damaged, dirty, or obstructed, or the infrared illuminators are obstructed or damaged.
  • Extreme lighting conditions are interfering with cabin illumination. Situations such as sunrise, sunset, stroboscopic effects, or tunnels can impact system performance.
  • Certain driver attributes—such as eyewear (glasses, sunglasses), clothing (scarf, hat, cap), facial objects (hygienic mask, smoking device), or cosmetics—may impact the overall performance of the feature.
  • Extreme seating positions may impact the overall performance of the feature.
  • Certain driver characteristics (illness, monocular vision, prosthetics) may impact the overall performance of the feature.
  • An issue with one or more vehicle systems is preventing Advanced Driver Distraction Warning from functioning properly.

The lists above do not represent every possible situation that may interfere with Advanced Driver Distraction Warning, and there are many reasons why it may not operate as intended. To avoid a collision, stay alert and always pay attention to the road so you can anticipate the need to take corrective action as early as possible.
